I just got an awesome Nokia N95 after a series of unpleasant experiences with different Dutch mobile phone providers. Since I felt extremely frustrated and I have no other way to release my feelings, I decided to right it down here. Otherwise, this could be considered as "The Adventures of a Customer Trying to Sign a Deal with a Phone Provider"

KPN – Primafone
At the beginning of the week I decided that after 4.5 years running on pre-paid cards, it was time to switch to contract – and get a good excuse to grab a new phone;-) For this operation, I aimed to rely on KPN Mobile, a subsidiary of former Dutch national phone company KPN. The reasons were that I already had a relationship with them for long time (via pre-paid cards) and that I perceived them as a reliable service provider.

After checking offers combining the acquisition of a phone and two year contract, I walked down the nearest Primafone shop, ID documentation in hand.

My goal was to leave the shop with a brand new phone and two year contract. The store’s clerk confirms the contractual conditions as seen on the web and proceeds to fill forms on the system. At certain moment, he points that I may not be able to take the phone with me right away because I wasn’t a dutch national. KPN had to check my ID data and on a period of 5 working days I’d be told via post letter if I was legible to acquire the phone.

I felt offended because to the eyes of my chosen partner, I was becoming a potential criminal. After a moderated argumentation with the store staff, I left waiting for Mr. KPN to give me permission to adquire his services.

Friday, the decision of KPN arrived to the mailbox. I could sign a contract with them (290 euro for the phone + 2 year subscription 30 euro/m) however, a deposit of 450 euro had to be paid within 8 days to activate the service because it seems that I could walk away with the phone. Otherwise, I could ask my employer to provide me documentation demonstrating that I was working for them for more than a year, and send it to KPN. Then…maybe, I could avoid to pay the deposit. Outrageous.

Cancelled the pending contract and walked to Orange.

The funky Orange Rotterdam’s flag-store promised a more friendly approach to customer service. Walked in, requested for a competitive offer similar to the previous one and made directly my point; "I’m not Dutch national, but registered in the city and coming with all sorts of ID documentation, can I sing in right now and walk out with the contract and phone with me?" . "No problem", the friendly clerk said.

For second time on a week, my EU Passport is photocopied and forms with personal data filed on company’s system. After requiring 30 mins to confirm the activation, a message from Orange appears on the screen. On a kinder way than KPN previously did, I was rejected. The message didn’t provide a reason; in order for me to know the reason and try to fix the problem, I had to write a letter (no phone transactions allowed) to Orange with a request. Do you think that if you kick my ass, I’m going to put energy in writing you a letter?

Cancelled all operations and walked to T-mobile.

Renatta happened to be a very kind clerk at the T-mobile store. I released some frustration with her and made the same question that did to Orange. She confirmed that no extra identity checking was required. So, the process starts for third time on a row. Ups! our system just went down. Renatta offers to try later on the day by herself and give me a call when all is set. Happily, I walk out of the store praying to the Gods of mobile technology to bless me with a call in few hours confirming that I could pick my phone and contract.

Then, I just saw the Vodafone kiosk.

After the accumulation of disappointment, my faith on the Gods attending my petition was low. So, decided to ask how much would my desired phone+contract cost me at Vodafone. The clerk comes with a very tasty offer, so I don’t doubt and request if a deal could be signed right away.

If this time Vodafone could satisfy my needs on a hassle-free way, I would cancel the contract with T-mobile.
And it did work. In fact, I got the N95 for just 125 euros and a contract including unlimited GPRS connection.

And then, Renatta calls; "Your data is on the system; you can come to sign the contract and pick the phone". Too late.

Just after half and hour of walking into the Vodafone kiosk, I left with a brand new phone, two year contract, and a great relief.

Closing remarks
At the end of the day, my personal data has been distributed through the systems of all four major cell companies in Netherlands, and I had a sweet & sour flavour in my mouth. Yes, I got the phone and contract under unbeatable conditions, but I also had to justify myself infront of organizations which, theoretically, I decided to make deals with.

The quote "people will forget what you said, will forget what you did, but never forget how you made them feel" applies perfectly to the situation described here. I felt suspiciously pointed and untrusted by KPN, and "not to the standards" with Orange. With T-mobile I felt willingness to provide a solution, and Vodafone understood my feelings and needs.

As customer, I may be very loyal to brands that provide me satisfactory solutions so I believe that a log relationship is starting now with Vodafone.
KPN, Orange, and T-mobile lost their chances, and they had plenty.

there is a quertw phone in the works for boost, but it may be several months out. they DO have a new phone (no qwerty) it’s the Moto i9 Stature, but they are sold out right now and they’re also $ 299
