a decade of mobile telephony

My consumer behaviour seems to be rather conservative when it comes to mobile phones: while most people I know replace theirs about biennially, mine usually have a longer lifespan. The decade started with an admittedly over-enthusiastic purchase of a S25, which was introduced in 1999 and has features in accordance with its former top-of-the-line position including a four-colour display (carried over from earlier models), organizer, voice recorder, integrated 9.6 kbit/s modem accessible via IrDA and an early mobile internet browser. It operates using the 2G GSM 900/1800 Mhz network and was I think the first Siemens phone to offer a built-in vibration alarm. Stand-by times with its third battery are still acceptable and add up to circa five days. Although it served me well, I eventually swapped it for an used entry-level A60 (2.5G tri-band) in 2006. Considerably smaller thickness and internal antenna made it more comfortable to carry along and the S25′s advanced functions were rarely used by me anyway.
Incidentally, this was also the year the German BenQ Mobile GmbH was forced to file for bankruptcy due to questionable circumstances, namely management and financing errors, just shortly after the parent company acquired Siemens’ loss-making mobile phone division. This caused major damage to BenQ’s (now Qisda Corp.) reputation in that country, but Siemens itself wasn’t without fault and the cost-cutting measures that were one factor to the division’s demise can already be found on this 2004 A60: plastics of low quality with relatively poor accuracy of fit, a pixelated colour display and imprecise keypad. On the plus side, the standard battery initially offered decent stand-by times and the firmware proved to be stable as well as intuitive.
I would have preferred to continue using this phone, but it recently broke and so this lightweight Alcatel OT-209 takes its place. Albeit it comes with a build-in FM radio (headset is used for reception) and useful LED torch light, the OT-209 is a very basic unit and practically focuses on telephony and SMS alone, WAP or email services for example are not available. A definite plus is the Micro-USB port for recharging and in my opinion the large keypad is pleasant to use. As one could imagine, the sticker price is a comparatively low ~€20 for an unbranded retail version and as of December 2010, a UK Virgin Mobile-subsidized one can even be bought for just £0.99 excluding prepaid credit. Still, I hope it will last five years or more and won’t treat it as disposable.

Definitely the Nokia N73. It has wonderful speakers with all these cool stereo functionalities (called by nokia “3D sound stereo speakers”) and has all the 3G stuff in it and 2 cams for video calls as well.
It’s price is very reasonable and it has a maximum speed of 384 kbps in 3G but on EDGE it is only 236.8 kbps max.
The music edition is only better in its interface and organization of the tracks, plus it has a bigger memory card but nothing related to the speed or speakers.
